Our Mission
Our goal is to advocate to protect children from hidden dangers and threats to their safety.
In the years following our tragic loss of Reese, we have been actively engaged in getting legislation passed to protect against the hazards of button batteries. While we continue to advocate and educate about the dangers of these products, we are also expanding to help fight for change with other hazardous children’s products. Our goal is to help prevent other families from the same pain and suffering we have experienced.
To date, here are some of our biggest accomplishments:
The passing of Reese’s Law includes
Battery compartments containing replaceable button cell or coin batteries must be secured such that they require the use of a tool or at least two independent and simultaneous hand movements to open.
Button cell or coin battery compartments must not allow such batteries to be accessed or liberated as a result of use and abuse testing.
The packaging for the overall product must bear a warning.
The product itself must bear a warning, if practicable.
Accompanying instructions and manuals must include all of the applicable warnings.
Additional accomplishments
Developing and bringing a safe battery to the market
Increasing education of parents and medical professionals of the signs and symptoms of button battery ingestion, as it is often misdiagnosed until after significant damage has happened.
Fund a medical device for easy and quick detection of button battery ingestion.
Even with the successful passing and implementation of Reese’s Law, we are still fighting to make improvements in the industry as well as focus our efforts on other areas of child safety advocacy.
